“Gross-Bettelheim is best known for her prints of urban buildings and social commentary, but this early work features a more intimate setting. After attending art school in Europe, the artist moved to the United States to study at the Cleveland School of Art in 1927. While still a student, she submitted prints including this one to the Cleveland Museum of Art’s annual May Show, an annual showcase of contemporary regional art. Her accepted works included self-portraits, studies of interiors, and natural landscapes, likely inspired by teachers like Henry Keller.”
