Curatorial Overview
“Among his contemporaries, Frank Wilcox was celebrated for his uniquely American style and themes of natural beauty, masculinity, and hard work. This freehand drawing exemplifies all three subjects: a lone man and his hunting dogs rest on a scenic overlook, contemplating the landscape that surrounds them. At a time when more of the North American continent was being settled and farmland turned into factories, this drawing asserted that the old American ideals of freedom and self-sustenance were still attainable.”
